At The Club

So, I just got back from the night club, not the best idea seeing as I have an exam tomorrow. The reason I went was because I was so stressed with my finals and tests that I just needed to blow off some steam. I met some nice people at the club and I managed to drop my name, so if you met someone at the club named Orion, that was me. The club was really fun I danced to some of my favorite tunes and had a few drinks while I was at it, Dad if you read this, don't worry, I studied really hard for my exam I have in the morning, I'll do great. Anyway I hope Everyone had a good week. I can't wait to get back to Chicago, Ill be back on December 13th at night.

Back At School

Hello everyone. I just got back to Syracuse last night just before midnight. I was not supposed to be back until tonight but there was supposed to be a big snow storm in both Chicago and Syracuse today and seeing as I was on the last flight from Chicago to JFK and from JFK to Syracuse, so more likely than not I would have been stuck somewhere. Two more weeks to go until winter break, these two weeks are going to be very hard, I have a lot of exams and papers to write. I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving, im sorry my family kept me busy from blogging while i was home. Ill see you all tomorrow.

Swamped

Hey everyone. I am so swamped with work, this is not the way I wanted to spend my thanksgiving break. I was thinking I would actually be able to go out and hang out with my friends, but this is looking futile. President Ahmadinejad is keeping me quite occupied at the moment. If my beautiful girlfriend didn't text me every few minutes I would probably go crazy by now. For now, I have a paper to write, so I'm going to sit back, take a deep breath, and crank out a top notch essay on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while listening to my favorite band, Filligar.

Stay Random Everyone,

Waiting For a Plane

As I write this I am sitting in the brand new jetBlue terminal at New York's JFK airport. I thought that having just gone through all of the hassles of checking in and going through security that I deserved a drink at the bar conveniently located right at my gate. In fact I noticed there are a lot of bars in this new terminal. Whoever designed this new terminal realized that traveling is stressful, and nothing disoves stress away like a good alcaholic beverage. Its a brilliant idea! The other amzing thing about this new terminal is how many name brand shops there are after security. I always used to complain about how there was not a direct flight from Chicago to Syracuse on jetBlue, but now that the new terminal is here I would gladly take a 2 hour layover here at JFK. in the main area of the terminal, just after security is a large aray of shops and resturaunts, if the food court is not your style, there is also a sit-down steak house and a sushi bar if you choose to spend your time eatinf well. The election is coming up on tuesday, I already voted and I hope everyone does their duty and votes regardless of who you vote for.

Collaborative Projects

I was perusing YouTube today when I came across a video from one of my favorite bloggers, iJustine. In her video she talking about how you can switch the gps off on the iPhone 3G to get "off the grid." Right after she said this people dressed in black burst through the door behind her and kidnaped her, then is said to go to this website to see what happens next. Of corse I was so interested I had to see what was going, if there is one thing I can't resist its a compelling story. It was a viral advertisment for a web series called In2ition. The plot is very interesting, revolving arround a little blonde girl with some sort of supernatural power, because the series just started compounded with with fact that the episodes are short, as a viewer i have not yet been able to grasp the full idea of the show. The thing i like most about the show is how it is fueled by viewer created ideas, which I feel eventually will give the show much more depth and intrigue. I encourage everyone to watch and contribute to it.

Being 21

As some of you know, last Thursday was my 21st birthday. For the first time in my life i could legally purchase and consume the nectar of the gods, alcohol. I find it weird being 21 because almost none of my friends at Syracuse are 21, in fact out of any of my friends here, the next on to turn 21 wont be until December, after everyone has gone home for their month of winter break. I guess thats ok, so ill have someone to go to the bars with when I get back here next semester, but what do I do until then? I don't exactly feel comfortable going to the bar by myself and not knowing anyone there, from my observations after going to one of the local bars here arround campus, most people go with friends and never socialize outside of their social circles. That makes it very hard to meet new people. I do have friends back home who are 21 or will be by thanksgiving so it will be fun to see them and hit some bars and clubs then. Im going to NYC this weekend to visit my friend, I want to go clubbing and to some bars when im there but he's not 21 yet, so maybe I can talk to some of my old friends from High School who are 21 and in NYC to see if they want to hang out that saturday night. Anyway I'm sorry for the lack of blogs I was really swamped with midterms and studying, but ive finished all that so now I'll be writing more.

The Social Experiment

Ok, so I went out to the quad today to attempt my experiment and I found that a lot of people ignored me when I was trying to get their attention to introduce myself. Which leads me to think that people are afraid of other people and this fear is keeping them from meeting potential new friends. I have not given up I will keep trying until I make at least three new friends out of complete strangers on the quad. I hate to think of them as strangers, I mean we all go to school together, why can't we be friends? Or why shouldn't I be able to go up to them and start a conversation and not have it be either awkward or creepy?

At the Movies

Hello everybody. Sorry about not writing anything new since Thursday. Last night I had the chance to attend an advanced screening of the movie Sex Drive. I thought it was amazing, my friend an I were laughing the whole movie. It doesn't come out until Friday October 17th so none of my other friends are going to be able to see it until then. I feel like one of the only drawbacks of an advanced screening of a movie is that not many other people have seen the movie yet so if you try and tell jokes from it nobody will understand. On the subject of movies there is a movie also coming out on Friday that i can't wait for, its called Filth and Wisdom featuring the music and lead singer from one of my favorite bands, Gogol Bordello! Anyway I hope everyone had a good weekend and didn't party too much. Below are links to the trailers for Sex Drive and Filth and Wisdom.

First Vlog!

As I said in my vlog i will take my experiment to the next level tomorrow and actually try and start a conversation with people on the quad. it should be interesting, I think people will be a bit less receptive to it as they were to me just saying hello in passing. I hope everyone like the vlog.

Video Blogs

Hi everyone. I was on YouTube today watching some of my favorite vloggers and I said to my self, maybe I should make some vlogs to go along with what I talk about here. I hope do one vlog per week. I think this week's vlog will be about my mission I gave everyone last night to say hello and introduce your self to ten random people on the street and see what happens. I am going to try my experiment again tomorrow on the Syracuse University Quad so be ready people. The vlog should be up some time thursday.

People These Days

This is a response to SunSoakedDreams at http://sunsoakeddreams.livejournal.com/ and her blog entry about text messaging. She writes:
"Do you ever wonder what happens to the words that we send
Do they bend, do they break from the flight that they take
And come back together again with a whole new meaning
In a brand new sense, completely unrelated to the one I sent"

*Did You Get My Message ~ Jason Mraz*

I think it is funny today how heavily the world relies on electronic communication. As much as I love receiving tiny little messages all day long on my cellular device, I can't help but feeling like I am disconnected from the world. I totally understand the convenience of being able to get out what you are saying in one quick task as opposed to the lengthiness of a telephone call. But don't you think it gets a little out of hand when people text so often that their clicking away interrupts the conversations they are having with the person sitting right in front of them.

I guess I just wish for those days of old, when people weren't too busy texting to say hello to the people they passed on the street. I also miss being able to know exactly what someone is trying to say through either facial expressions or the tone in their voice. Texting has neither face nor sound, just the silly ringtone that plays and the words that scroll across the screen. For me the thrill of looking at my phone and finding I have a few messages from those I love does not measure up to the excitement of an unexpected phone call. A text can not convey the love in one's voice, the happiness in their soul, or their excitement to be delivering their message to you....the cellular market still has miles to go before they can satisfy me =)

So, did you get my message?

Well SunsoakedDreams, I did get your message and I think you are right. I don't know about you but I hate how paranoid the world has become these days. Since when did it become considered creepy to say hello to random people in public. This is sad. Everyone needs to relax a bit and start trusting people a little more. I know there are some wackos out there but they are the extreme minority, I feel that most people are genuinely nice.

You mentioned "
don't you think it gets a little out of hand when people text so often that their clicking away interrupts the conversations they are having with the person sitting right in front of them." That behavior is down right disrespectful. Can't the person at the other end of the text wait a few minutes for you to finish talking to whoever you are face to face with? If I were in that situation I would just walk away from the person texting. I knew a person once who would prefer to do all of their conversations electronically instead of face to face or over the phone. I have a mission for my readers, at the next chance you go into public, go and say hello or introduce your self to 10 random people and see what happens. I'll do it and post back tomorrow night with the results.

Welocome to The Theory of Randomness

I guess since this is my first entry I should explain a few things about both myself and this blog. Well, lets start with me. My name is Orion Field, I am originally from Chicago, IL; but i go to college at Syracuse University. I am a third year International Relations major. For all the ladies out there, I am single, but hopefully I will find someone nice soon. At the moment I'm 20 but I'll be 21 in a very short amount of time on the 23rd of October. I wouldn't label myself as a geek but I do have a love for Science Fiction, I'll try not to rant too much about that topic though. I am a self taught photographer and I will be putting some of my art on here as well, as soon as I get a chance. I also like to swim and play water polo, although this is the first year since 5th grade that I haven't been on a water polo team. An interesting, but geekish fact about me is that I collect 1:400 scale model airplanes, I have over 200 of them spread out between my house in Chicago and my apartment in Syracuse. Other than this blog I have a few creative project that I am trying to find the time to work on, one of which is my photography which I have been unable to do since my camera is in Chicago and I'm in Syracuse. My second creative project is a screenplay I am trying to write but I have yet to write anything except the plot outline. My third project is a band that I would like to start, as soon as I find the time to learn the guitar. But enough about and more about the blog. The reason I called my blog The Theory of Randomness because I love all of the random happenstances that happen all the time in life. I plan on writing and discussing what ever pops into my head at the time, anything from politics to cooking to TV to my classes. The other Part of the title Orion Field, my pen name, has to do with my hometown of Chicago. A girl i used to know told me once that Chicago used to be called Orion Field before it was a city, but I have never been able find proof of that, but the name stuck with me and I like the randomness of it.
